Radiation Bulletin: August 5th – 11th 2013

Summary

rabull-grayWow!  What a mess.  First off, the state of Nevada’s wire services are being curtailed more, now losing 3 days out of 7.  Hopefully there will be an alternative sooner than later.  The Fukushima leak has created a new flareup of media coverage in the last week almost on a par with 2011. There’s even been a call to remove TEPCo from being in charge of the cleanup, as the growing scale of the leaks hit worldwide.  The anniversary of the Hiroshima/Nagasaki bombings was a major story in Japan as was a growing split between weapons and power groups.  At least one of the major peace groups that has pro-nuclear power leanings  is linked to unions that work for the electric industry.  The scandal hitting South Korea continues, but on a far smaller scale, with arrest warrants for 19 people involved in the scandal over faked documents.  The large scale opposition to nuclear energy in India continues in many areas of the country, with Kudamkoolam still not fully operational. The UK opened up a new super offshore wind farm.

In the US there was a scurry of coverage about US Downwinders, Entergy’s finances is being probed by NRC and there were any number of stories about DOE activities as the country’s media cooled down after the previous week’s bombshells.  It was also a bad hair, err, health week, so am cutting back on summaries.  Do hope there will be more news about reduced coverage.
