Chavez Denies Collaborating With Colombian Rebels (Update1)
By Daniel Cancel and Matthew Walter
May 9 (Bloomberg) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said accusations
made by U.S. President George W. Bush linking him to Colombia's largest
rebel group are lies.
Chavez said in comments broadcast by state television that he never
collaborated with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.
The Wall Street Journal reported today that U.S. intelligence officials
have said that files recovered from the computer of a dead leader of
the FARC, as the guerrilla group is known, prove Venezuela asked the
rebels for guerrilla warfare training and offered to help supply them
with rockets.
Interpol said it will publish its findings next week from an analysis
of the computer files. It's conducting forensic tests to determine
their authenticity.
Chavez also said the United States is supporting a movement within
Venezuelan oppositions groups to seek greater autonomy from the
government in parts of the country, similar to what happened last week
in Bolivia.
The president said such a movement would provoke a civil war.
``If you are going to try and separate from Venezuela, go look for an
army,'' Chavez said.
