Venezuela struggles to hold back inflation

The Associated Press
Published: May 6, 2008

CARACAS, Venezuela: Venezuela is reporting inflation of 1.7 percent for
the past month - indicating it's still struggling to hold down
prices.

The Central Bank's inflation figure for April is unchanged from the
previous month's rate. Inflation in the first four months of this year
has been 8.9 percent in the oil-rich country.

The figures released on Tuesday indicate that Venezuela is still
struggling with inflation. The country had the highest rate in Latin
America last year at about 22 percent.

President Hugo Chavez's government has issued US$4 billion (?2.6
billion) in bonds this year as part of an effort to close 2008 with an
inflation rate of less than 20 percent.
