Internationally-renowned Alberto Alonso was one of the founders of what later became Cuba's National Ballet and the Cuban Ballet School, along with his elder brother Fernando and sister-in-law Alicia Alonso. Alberto Alonso broke with the artistic prejudices of his epoch and studied Pro Arte Musical, in Havana in 1930, says a Juventud Rebelde newspaper online report. He was followed by his brother Fernando, with whom, after marrying Alicia MartC-nez (Alicia Alonso) in 1938, made up the trio that set the foundations of the ballet in the island. In the mid 1940's, Alberto Alonso shined as the first dancer of the Russian Ballet of Montecarlo. He traveled all over Europe, U.S, and Australia performing the roles of Prince Igor, The Prodigious Son, Petrushka and Le Coq d'Or, among others. He starred in the ballets of choreographers Michel Fokine, George Balanchine, Leonide Massine and Sir Anton Dolin. Late in the 1930s, Alberto joined the American Ballet Theatre, hosting outstanding choreographers such as Anthony Tudor and Jerome Robbins, and participated along with Fred Astaire in the film 'Yolanda.' In 1948 he returned to Cuba to join the recently created Alicia Alonso Ballet. Years later, he created his own ballet company and started his career as a choreographer. Among his best creations are the dramatic ballet 'Carmen' and the musical comedy 'Un Dia en el Solar,' first performed in the Musical Theatre of Havana in 1965. -------------- next part -------------- _______________________________________________ Ingles mailing list Ingles@ain.cu http://ainch.ain.cu/mailman/listinfo/ingles * ================================================================= NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems Since 1985 - Information for the Rest of Us Our main website: http://www.blythe.org List Archives: http://blythe-systems.com/pipermail/nytr/ Subscribe: http://blythe-systems.com/mailman/listinfo/nytr =================================================================
