Panamanians Ratify Solidarity with Cuban Five

Havana, Oct 24 (acn) Panamanian legal experts, scholars and journalists 
packed the assembly hall of the National College of Lawyers on Tuesday 
to receive detailed information on the case of the five Cuban 
antiterrorist fighters unjustly held in US prisons for more than nine 
years.

Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez, Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labanino 
and Rene Gonzalez, internationally know as the Cuban Five, were 
detained in 1998 for trying to prevent terrorist actions organized by 
rightwing, anti-Cuba organizations based in Florida. The men were 
charged in a biased Miami court and given extremely harsh sentences for 
crimes they never committed.

Maria Eugenia Guerrero, sister of Antonio, said that if the US could 
demonstrate the Cuban Five were spies, the mainstream media would have 
immediately orchestrated a spectacle, instead of lifting a wall of 
silence around the case.

President of the Panamanian Service of Peace and Justice, Julio Yao, 
denounced Washington's aggressive policy against the island for more 
than 45 years which has caused huge damage to the Cuban people and loss 
of life.

Another prominent Panamanian lawyer, Julio Berrios, recalled that the 
sentences of the Cuban Five had been revoked by Atlanta's Court of 
Appeals. However, the judges' ruling was later rejected by the US 
government in a stall tactic.

For his part, President of the Independent Lawyers Front Vicente 
Archivold Blake called upon the US public opinion to enforce the 
principles of its judicial system to guarantee the Five's right to a 
fair trial.
