Venezuelans Double Chavez Changes

Caracas , Oct 23 (Prensa Latina) The Venezuelan constitutional reform
project is now aimed modifying 66 articles of the Constitution, doubled
from the 33 articles initially proposed by President Hugo Chavez.

The Congress' Joint Commission added 25 more to prepare the report for
the third and definitive discussion in the National Assembly's plenary
session.

Later, analysis in that context has so far provided another eight
chapters, proposed by several sectors from the so-called street
parliamentarianism.

The Venezuelan Communist Party announced that it will mobilize its
structures to for a Yes in the referendum in charge of approving the
President's initiative.

The organization's political bureau member Carlos Aquino stated that
was a decision adopted in the 14th Central Committee plenary session
held on October 20.

Groups of youth opposed to Chavez' project called for a rally today at
the Congress headquarters, to reject the constitutional changes.

Venezuelan Students Present Differing Views on Reform

Caracas, Oct 23 (Prensa Latina) Venezuelan students of conflicting
political trends presented before Parliament their views on a draft
constitutional reform, the third version of which is under discussion.

Previously on Tuesday, the two groups had staged demonstrations near
the National Assembly, where police had to intervene to prevent clashes.

Nelson Perez, representative of the youngsters who aspire to join the
United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), highlighted democratic
conditions in the country, where either those who reject or support the
proposal are entitled to present their views.

On behalf of the opposition, student Yon Goicochea, put forward their
views before a group of deputies led by Vice President of the National
Assembly Roberto Hernandez.

However, in remarks to journalists at the end of his speech, Goicochea
criticized lamented that parliamentarians also received those
supporting the reform promoted by President Hugo Chavez.

Meanwhile, youngsters supporting this Socialist proposal deplored the
withdrawal of the opposition delegation to avoid discussion.

"They did not want to discuss because they are aware of our
preparedness," one of the youngters supporting constitutional
modifications told journalists.
