Nadia Raveles,Chair of Suriname re Cuban Resolution at UN October 30

Statement of the Suriname-Cuba Friendship Committee on the 
General Assembly of the United Nations on October 30, 2007 
regarding the immediate ending of the economic blockade 
against Cuba by the United States of America.

Statement

Almost fifty years ago the government of the United States of America 
established an economic blockade against Cuba, aimed at weakening the 
economy, causing hunger, misery and hopelessness among the Cuban people
in order to bring about dissatisfaction and resistance to the Cuban
Revolution and its leaders.

This inhuman action finally would have to lead to the overthrow of the
Cuban government and the end of the Revolutionary process.

Now after 50 long years and 15 resolutions, the world for the 16th time
is to vote on this matter in the United Nations.

Even though in all the preceding resolutions and especially in the
15th, adopted on November 8, 2006, an overwhelming majority of the
world community has insisted on ending the blockade, the USA under the
leadership of President G.W.Bush Jr. have intensified and exacerbated
the blockade.

Between November 2006 and now there are many examples of sanctions and 
measures aimed at bringing the heroic Cuban people and their leaders to 
their knees.

This extremely inhuman situation must now finally be brought to an end.

The Suriname-Cuba Friendship Committee hereby calls upon the government
and the people of Suriname and all the peoples of the world to not only
strongly condemn this economic war and all of its manifestations, but
also to force the USA as of now to end all measures that go against the
sovereignty and the right to self-determination of the Cuban people;
this subject to sanctions to be imposed by the United Nations against
the USA.
