Over 8 Million Cubans To Vote on Sunday

Havana, Oct 19 (acn) Over 8.3 million Cubans will exercise their right 
to ballot on Sunday by voting the delegates to the Popular Power 
municipal assemblies, the President of the National Electoral 
Commission, Maria Esther Reus said on Thursday.

Cuba's prime-time TV show The Round Table was attended Thursday by 
leaders of mass and student organizations who talked about the intense 
work carried out throughout the island from the nomination process for 
candidates up to the moment.

Reus, who is also Cuba's Justice Minister, said the electoral process 
constitutes a democratic event in the 169 municipalities of the island 
where over 37,700 electoral colleges will be established.

The Cuban official highlighted the excellent work of the electoral 
commissions to prevent any problem using a pilot election carried out 
on October 14 in western and central Cuba and on October 18 in the 
eastern provinces.

Likewise, she stressed the importance of exhibiting the photos and the 
biographies of the candidates since September 29, so that the electors 
have enough time to get to know their representatives. There is no 
individual canvassing for votes in Cuba.

Reus acknowledged the labor of the electoral colleges in the production 
of ballot boxes and papers and noted that 32% of the districts have 
more than two candidates which could lead to a second round in the 
elections.

The Cuban Minister confirmed the island's readiness for elections to be 
held on Sunday when 15,236 delegates to the Popular Power municipal 
assemblies will be elected by the Cuban people.
