Cuban Medical Brigade's Work Praised in Peru

Havana, Oct 16 (acn) Over 61,000 patients have benefited from the 
treatment offered by the Cuban medical brigade that flew to Peru two 
months ago to aid the victims of an earthquake.

The 77 Cuban healthcare workers arrived a few days after the disaster 
in the city of Pisco where some 600 deaths had been reported.

The Cuban international brigade has established two tent hospitals in 
the disaster area though nearly 42% of the consultations have been 
carried out in the field, reports PL news agency.

Thus far, the island's specialists have carried out over 500 operations 
-40 percent of them major surgery- and more than 10,000 diagnostic 
examinations, including lab tests, ultrasounds, X rays and 
electrocardiograms.

La Primera newspaper noted that the Cuban doctors not only assist the 
earthquake victims but other low-income patients like Cristian Nieves 
who has no access to a free healthcare system.

Nieves said she had fractured her fibula and her tibia in an accident, 
and a hospital in Lima offered to operate on her for nearly 2,000 
dollars or amputate her foot for a lesser fee.

"I had already resigned myself, but then a doctor told me about the 
hospital the Cubans had installed in Pisco and I came immediately,"
said Nieves.

"They did not charge me a cent for the operation and I'm recovering 
very well. I'm very thankful for what they have done for me," she added.

The members of the Cuban international brigade said they are willing to 
stay in Peru as long as that country's authorities consider it 
necessary.
