Venezuela Seizes Nearly 40 Tons of Drugs

Caracas, Oct 12 (Prensa Latina) Venezuela has so far confiscated 38.3
tons of drugs and 168.348 kg of chemical products to prevent the
country from becoming a producer and a corridor for those substances.

According to figures published by the National Anti-drugs Office, the
country has seized about 18.66 tons of cocaine (48.71 percent) and
19.35 tons of marihuana (50.62 percent) from January 1 to October 11.

Also on the list is almost 1.26 tons crack, 1.09 tons of heroin and 0.6
tons of cocaine base, in addition of 19.333 tablets of ecstasy,
amphetamines and rophinol. 

About 2,131 people have been detained, of them 205 foreigners, included
75 Colombians and 25 Spanish people.

Venezuela is not a drug-producing country or has dangerous consumption
problems, but suffers the drug trafficking consequences due to the use
of the territory as a bridge to the larger markets, mainly United
States and Europe.

The Venezuelan anti-drug program includes the prohibition of
transactions and registration of documents to purchase buildings and
other cash to impede the entrance of undeclared income in the national
bank system.
