The situation is not likely to change over the weekend due to unfavorable conditions in the atmosphere, said Jose Rubiera, Director of the Forecast Center at Cuba's National Meteorology Institute. "This synoptic situation is typical of October", added Rubiera. From Wednesday 10, he specified, the rain grew even heavier and reached the category of "intense". According to reports, more than 200 millimeters have fallen in different locations. Notable accumulations reported over a 24-hour period include the 306 millimeters registered in Vista Alegre, Santiago de Cuba; 265 mm in Aserradero and 234 mm in Maisi, both localities of Guantanamo. On Thursday, the easternmost province of Guantanamo remained cut off from Santiago de Cuba by road because of the continuous rising levels of La Yaya reservoir, the largest in the territory. Nearly 400 inhabitants were evacuated from the Rio Cauto municipality in Granma province, where flooding has affected more than 1,000 homes in low-lying areas. The Sagua de Tanamo and Mayari Rivers in Holguin province have burst their banks, resulting in the evacuation of over 2,200 locals on Thursday evening. Territories linking Holguin and Las Tunas are presenting a more complex situation. Las Tunas province reported that the region received 117 per cent of the normal rainfall for October in the first 10 days of the month alone. Twenty of the 30 reservoirs controlled by the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources were almost full by October 11. Heavy rains have also required the evacuation of cattle in areas likely to flood and consequently lowered the production of milk by 60,000 liters in the central province of Camaguey, which has the largest number of cattle and accounts for 28 per cent of the milk produced in the country. In every one of the territories affected by the intense rain, the necessary preventative measures have been adopted by the Defense Councils in order to save human lives, economic resources, equipment and facilities. -------------- next part -------------- _______________________________________________ Ingles mailing list Ingles@ain.cu http://ainch.ain.cu/mailman/listinfo/ingles * ================================================================= NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems Since 1985 - Information for the Rest of Us Our main website: http://www.blythe.org List Archives: http://blythe-systems.com/pipermail/nytr/ Subscribe: http://blythe-systems.com/mailman/listinfo/nytr =================================================================
