He allegedly quit Cuba one day, but in reality he left silently, in the necessary silence to carry out the greatest of his works as constructor and poet. On September 12th, 1998, he was detained in Miami for his love of humanity, although the FBI, experts in subterfuge, accused him of serious crimes. Since then, Antonio "Tony" Guerrero Rodriguez, alongside his four brothers in the ordeal, began to live a different life: the life of a prisoner who for just and moving reasons, is always free despite being behind bars. In a cruel and farcical trial, they sentenced him to life plus 10 years in prison. Thus he received a share of the perversity which Judge Joan Lenard meted out along with Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labanino, Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzalez, of four life sentences and 77 years behind bars. Born on October 16th, 1958, Antonio will celebrate his 49th birthday in jail. It should be said that he still celebrates his birthdays because he does not believe in defeat, even serving his sentence which in addition to being excessively, has become absurd. In manuscripts penned in prison, he has also revealed in verse his testimony of optimism, love of life and songs of hope. The texts ratify the attitude of someone who feels free inside a cell and reveal the profound humane and sensitive side of the author. Fresh, vital, passionate, unaffected, without technical complexities, charged with essential and intimate truths, his poetry talks about different issues including very personal reflections, related to his social commitment. On December 27th, 2001, in his submission before sentencing, he concluded by saying: "At last we rest free and victorious facing into the sun that today is denied from us". It is a declaration of unshaken faith in the dearest of human virtues, of the many with which the Cuban Five continue their mission facing into the sun, for that which they have fought for. /map -------------- next part -------------- _______________________________________________ Ingles mailing list Ingles@ain.cu http://ainch.ain.cu/mailman/listinfo/ingles * ================================================================= NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems Since 1985 - Information for the Rest of Us Our main website: http://www.blythe.org List Archives: http://blythe-systems.com/pipermail/nytr/ Subscribe: http://blythe-systems.com/mailman/listinfo/nytr =================================================================
