Some 450 Cuban internationalists, including 107 doctors, nurses and health personnel, gave their contribution from 1966 until 1975 during the struggle for independence of the African country. Participants in the meeting recalled special moments of that period when Vieira was a member of the Politburo of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea Bissau and Cape Verde and also the commander of the armed forces. The President of Guinea Bissau arrived in Cuba last Sunday for a four-day official visit at the invitation of Cuban First Vice President Raul Castro, with whom he held official talks on Monday. On Tuesday, he laid a wreath on the pantheon of the Cuban martyrs who died fighting for the independence of the African peoples. He also visited the Latin American School of Medicine where he received information about the program of the Cuban Revolution to train health professionals from almost 30 countries of the Third World.
