US Blockade Deprives Cuban People of Much Needed Anesthetics

Havana, October 2 (acn) Not even children are sparred the torment of 
Washington's blockade against Cuba, as youth on the island suffer from 
the inaccessibility to US-made anesthetics and other pain killers 
having US-produced ingredients.

"Sevoflurane, a general anesthesia used on children for controlling 
pain during surgeries, is an example of a medicine which Cuba does not 
have access to," says Humberto Sainz Cabrera, president of Cuba's 
Society for Anesthetics and Resuscitation in statements published by 
Granma Daily on Tuesday.

Abbott Laboratories, the maker of Sevoflurane, was also denied a permit 
to export to Cuba another latest-generation medicine called 
Dexmetomidine, which is effective as a both a sedative and an 
analgesic, and is used for the protection against heart problems during 
surgeries.

Even US doctors cannot believe their government is capable of such 
sinister acts towards another country, added Cabrera. Cuban 
professionals have been denied visas to enter the US to attend 
international conferences after being considered "threats to the 
interests of the United States," he concluded.
