The maneuvers included military personnel from the west and central regions of the country. Military aircraft and tanks were also part of the training exercises, known as Moncada 2007, which ended Friday. Earlier this year, ailing Cuban President Fidel Castro said in an article published by the state-run "Granma" newspaper that his country will continue to build up its defenses against what he said are threats by the United States. He accused President Bush of wanting to invade the island. Cuba and the United States have had no formal relations in more than 40 years. President Bush has said the longstanding U.S. embargo on Cuba will remain in place, as long as he termed "the regime" maintains its monopoly on the political and economic life of the Cuban people. Mr. Bush also challenged the international community to support what he calls the democratic movement growing in Cuba, and to help the country become a free society. Fidel Castro and the Cuban foreign minister, Felipe Perez Roque, said the recent Bush speech advocated what they called the reconquest of Cuba by force. Mr. Castro has not been seen publicly since July of last year, when he underwent intestinal surgery and handed power to his younger brother, Raul, on a provisional basis. Details of Fidel Castro's health are a state secret. *** Granma Daily - Nov 24, 2007 http://www.granma.cubaweb.cu/english/news/art66.html Cuba Concludes Military Defense Exercise By JOEL MAYOR LORAN The helicopters gun down the supposed enemy. The metal birds audaciously appear from behind the hills and join the action. Their support is vital for the outcome of the battle. The territorybs defensive contingent, the tanks, the infantry, the artillery and the air force repel the adversarybs attempts to advance towards the Cuban capital. Itbs the end of the Moncada 2007 military exercise. From high above, the fire and dark smoke over the advancing tanks indicate that the beautiful landscape as far as the eye can see remains like the rest, entirely Cuban. Major Jose Luis Reyes has fulfilled multiple missions over the last few days including troop transportation and logistic support. He also assures that therebs no bravery in what he does bonly duty and experience. Reyes and his comrades comprise a team trained for any possible challenge in Cuban skies. Each mission is different, assures the man with 24 years experience. Nevertheless, he makes it clear that he knows the terrain like the palm of his hand, every mountain or palm grove, every plain or reservoir. He must also know the places where the wind blows stronger and, of course, the possible routes of landing troops. The townbs residents are now waiting for the officer bwho studied at the Camilo Cienfuegos Military Schoolb in an open area of the neighboring community. Civilians have merged with the troops who participated in the exercise; they talk with soldiers in tank units, infantrymen, gunners and pilots, and with the press, only the uniforms differentiate them. They are all ready for defense. After the five days of the Moncada 2007 exercises, remains the satisfaction of seeing everyone involved in the defense effort. With that comes a certainty that for every possible action on the part of the enemy there is a strategy anticipated to defeat it. Cubans are prepared to defend their country; attacking it would be foolish. * ================================================================= NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems Since 1985 - Information for the Rest of Us Our main website: http://www.blythe.org List Archives: http://blythe-systems.com/pipermail/nytr/ Subscribe: http://blythe-systems.com/mailman/listinfo/nytr =================================================================
