Back on that memorable date in the first year of the Cuban revolution, volunteers began building a school in the municipality of Bartolome Maso, also in Granma. On Sunday work centered on recovering agricultural production. Some 100,000 people turned out for the effort, reports Granma newspaper. Rio Cauto, where the effects of the heavy rains associated with the storm were felt the most, was the scene of special activities for the commemoration. Some 10,000 people from the community took part in cleanup, planting vegetable nurseries, repairing homes and other urgent tasks. Elvis Galan Jimenez, a representative of the local Young Communist League (UJC), highlighted the positive turnout Sunday and on other previously held volunteer days called to speed up the recovery effort. Pedro Victor Simon Rodriguez, secretary general of the Cuban Worker's Federation (CTC) for the province of Granma, said the new revolutionary consciousness spearheaded by Che in 1959 has been transmitted from one generation of Cubans to another. *** Prensa Latina, Havana http://www.plenglish.com Cuban Youth Plunge into Voluntary Work Havana, Nov 25 (Prensa Latina) Thousands of Cuban youth are carrying out Sunday a brigade for voluntary work in the island, to remember the example of Argentinean-Cuban guerrilla fighter Ernesto Che Guevara. Young Communist League's National Bureau member Maday Iglesias told "Juventud Rebelde" newspaper that efforts for the economic and social recovery will be focused on the country's eastern provinces. After intensive rains, associated to Tropical Storm Noel by late October and early November, the eastern Cuba had material losses valued at $500 million. The youth leader said that actions in the rest of the island's territories are aimed to the production and services, the campaign against the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, and the construction of social works. Che personally created and boosted the first brigade of voluntary work in Cuba, on November 22, 1959. * ================================================================= NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems Since 1985 - Information for the Rest of Us Our main website: http://www.blythe.org List Archives: http://blythe-systems.com/pipermail/nytr/ Subscribe: http://blythe-systems.com/mailman/listinfo/nytr =================================================================
