Uribe on the Attack

Colombia's President Targets Chavez as "Friend of Terrorists"

by Patrick J. O'Donoghue

As the Colombia-Venezuela diplomatic controversy gathers storm,
Colombian President Alvaro Uribe has put the boot in calling on
President Chavez not to set the continent alight.

Speaking openly for the first time since his government stopped
President Chavez' mediation of a humanitarian agreement with the
Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), Uribe accuses President
of siding with terrorism.

Uribe comments that what Colombia needs are people seeking to combat
terrorism and not people who legitimize terrorism.

The Colombian government stopped Chavez from brokering the agreement on
grounds that he broke the rules by telephoning the Colombian military
high command without informing Uribe.

In a hard-hitting criticism the Colombian president slams Chavez for
freezing relations with Colombia and Spain and other countries.

"The truth is that one cannot set the continent alight as you do,
talking one day against Spain, the next day against the United States,
one day mistreating Mexico, the next Peru and tomorrow, Bolivia."

Colombian Senator, Piedad Cordoba also got the chop and there is talk
of charges of treason against her for suggesting that countries were
justified in criticizing Colombia for torpedoing the humanitarian
agreement process.
