President of Canary Islands Continues Visit to Cuba

Havana, Nov 23 (acn) The president of the Spanish autonomy of the
Canary Islands, Paulino Rivero, continues its official visit to Cuba on
Friday with meetings with Cuban vice presidents Carlos Lage Davila and
Jose Ramon Machado Ventura to check on the development of bilateral
cooperation ties.

The leader of this autonomy, one of the 17 in which the Spanish
territory is currently divided, has a tight agenda that included the
inauguration on Thursday of the Fourth Festival of Traditions of the
Canary Islands in the Cuban capital.

On this occasion, the visitor made a call to continue the traditional
line of cooperation, solidarity and understanding between the Canary
Islands and Cuba.

During the 19th century, there was a numerous and sustained emigration
of people from that Spanish archipelago to the Caribbean island, which
is one of the main cultural and ethnographic roots of the Cuban nation.

The Canary Islands, located near the north-east coasts of Africa, is
comprised of seven major islands: El Hierro, La Gomera, La Palma and
Tenerife, which form the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife; and Grand
Canary, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, which form Las Palmas.

Also part of the Canaries is the archipelago of Chinijo (comprised of
La Graciosa, Alegranza, MontaC1a Clara, Roque del Este, Roque del Oeste
and Isla de Lobos; all of them part of Las Palmas.

This region is an important tourist destination that every year
receives nearly 10 million visitors.
