[NYTr] Uribe Torpedoes Negotiations, Wants Unilateral Release of FARC Hostages Date: Fri, 23 Nov 2007 18:49:14 -0600 (CST) Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit Prensa Latina, Havana http://www.plenglish.com Colombian President Asks for FARC Gesture Bogota, Nov 23 (Prensa Latina) Colombian President Alvaro Uribe surprised the Colombian population when he asked the Colombian Revolutionary Armed Forces (FARC) for an unilateral gesture and release of the hostages they still have. An action like that would be welcomed by the Colombian government, said Uribe before congressmen and deputies of at least 12 countries in a meeting of the Latin American Parliament. "If FARC forces deliver the prisoners to Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez or French President Nicolas Sarkozy or the International Red Cross, the Colombian government will welcome that liberation," he pointed. Uribe had cancelled the mediating step by Chavez and opposition senator Piedad Cordoba. "We believe security is the path for peace," he said. He accused the FARC troops to make actions with "lies, delays and murders" and recognized the relevance of the mediation of Chavez and Cordoba. hr tac rc PL-53 * ================================================================= NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems Since 1985 - Information for the Rest of Us Our main website: http://www.blythe.org List Archives: http://blythe-systems.com/pipermail/nytr/ Subscribe: http://blythe-systems.com/mailman/listinfo/nytr =================================================================
