According to press reports, last Thursday the Ecuadorian leader was submitted to a search in a clear violation of his status as a head of state. A Foreign Ministry statement said that the most elemental civility towards a head of state was absent in the treatment of President Correa. The Foreign Ministry maintains that international norms of diplomatic courtesy oblige friendly countries to provide a foreign leader with the due attention and facilities, even if only in transit.
