Luis Miranda of NY Casa de las Americas Dies

Luis Miranda, for many years the president of the New York Casa de las
Americas, a founder of the July 26 Movement in that city, and
considered a tireless defender of the Cuban revolution, died on Tuesday
in New York.

Miranda was part of a generation of Cuban emigrants to the United
States who always remained loyal to their country and organized to help
in the struggle against the Batista dictatorship.

At the request of Fidel Castro, Miranda and other comrades founded a
chapter of the July 26 Movement in New York, where he had lived the
majority of his life. The group raised funds to support the liberation
effort and Miranda became a spokesperson against the crimes of the
dictatorship and the reasons for the national rebellion.

Miranda was a founder of Casa Cuba, a forerunner of the Casa de las
Americas, for decades a home for dozens of Latin American organizations
and others from outside the region. However, the Casa was above all a
place of solidarity with the island and its struggles against the US
Empire.

The Casa de las Americas and its president Luis Miranda were the object
of numerous attacks by terrorist organizations of the anti-Cuban mafia.
However, those wounds only served to multiply their determination and
commitment to a just and patriotic cause.
