Over 4,500 Doctors Trained in Latin American School of Medicine

Havana, Nov 15 (acn) More than 4,500 doctors from some 30 countries
have graduated from Havana's Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM)
since its inauguration on November 15, 1999.

In statements to acn news agency, the rector of ELAM, Dr. Juan Carrizo,
noted that the educational program for the training of Latin American
doctors has been spread throughout the island with the opening of 22
faculties of medicine.

Carrizo also highlighted the high academic level and the social and
humanitarian commitment of the young graduates, which has allowed them
to treat the most needed sectors in their countries.

There are 10,000 students from Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa,
the United States and Haiti in the ELAM project this academic year.

The initiative was masterminded by Cuban President Fidel Castro in
response to Hurricanes George and Mitch which hit the coasts of Central
America and the Caribbean in 1998 causing massive damage and loss of
life.
