Peru Cardinal Attacks President Chavez

Lima, Nov 12 (Prensa Latina) Peruvian conservative Cardinal Juan Luis
Cipriani joined a wave of media and political attacks against
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, whom he called "a bad mannered
prepotente" and said he doesn't trust him.

The controversial cardinal, a member of the Catholic conservative group
Opus Dei, lashed at Chavez's criticism of Spanish ex President Jose
Maria Aznar's meddling in Venezuela.

Cipriani said Chavez is not in condition to become Peru's business
partner and called on the government to be cautious with Venezuelan
investments, but President Alan Garcia and Foreign Minister Jose Garcia
Belaunde rejected the censure.

Critics of Cipriani recall his silent support as bishop of Ayacucho
during the human rights violations by the military in the so-called
dirty internal war.

Such antecedents and close ties to the 1990-2000 criticize government
of Alberto Fujimori turned Cipriani into the first cardinal in history
condemned by Peruvian Catholics who consider him undignified for the
office.
