Honduras Becomes Member 17th of Petrocaribe

Cienfuegos, Dec 21(acn) Honduras Minister of Defense Aristides Mejia 
described as 'opportune' the entry of his country as member 17 of the 
Petrocaribe organization this December 21, which was encouraged by 
Venezuela.

'This membership will report benefits to Honduras because the country 
will pay a much more fair price for oil imports,' said Mejias, who 
headed the Honduran delegation at the fourth Petrocaribe Summit, held 
Friday in Cienfuegos City, Cuba.

Minister Mejias told reporters that Honduran President Manuel Zelaya 
made the official request for membership, and announced that 
Venezuela's Minister of Energy and Oil Rafael Ramirez will travel to 
Honduras on Sunday to meet with Zelaya.

Honduras formerly signed the Caracas Pact in 2002. The country consumes 
some 16 million oil barrels per year.
