Cuban Teenager Winner of Ibero-American Spelling Contest

Havana, Dec 20 (acn) Cuban teenager Karen de la Vega Hernandez is 
capable of digesting a host of words in 30 seconds. This ability made 
her winner of the 8th Ibero-American Spelling Contest held in the 
Dominican Republic.

Karen was the only Cuban among contestants from eleven other countries, 
and she shared the prize along with another three young students from 
Spain and the host country, Mexico.

When asked about the source of her passion for words, the 17-year old 
student told Granma newspaper "I owe it to my mother and especially my 
grandmother, who gave me dictations since I was very little. Then, that 
habit became almost an addiction for words, for their meaning and how 
to write them properly."

Karen, who is studying in 12th grade at Havana's Vladimir Lenin Senior 
High School, explained that the contest was carried out by rounds and 
against the clock. Twelve students participated in the first round. 
Only those who had 90 points minimum were able to move on to second 
round, but from the third up to the seventh rounds contestants had to 
obtain 100 points. No mistakes were allowed.

"By the time we got to the last test -in round 7- there were only six 
finalists left. Then, they explained to us that they would dictate five 
words directly selected from the dictionary. If we managed to write all 
of them properly, then all of us would be considered winners on equal 
terms and only four of us made it."
