Malmierca warned the UN Assembly about the scourges threatening childhood throughout the world. He mentioned wars, preventable diseases, famine, inequalities, climate change and the continued lack of resources in most regions of the planet. Likewise, the Cuban representative denounced the lack of cooperation and coercive and unilateral measures imposed by certain developed countries, Granma newspaper published this Thursday. Cuba's ambassador to the UN said that as a result of the unfair world order, some 10 million children die every year, most of them from preventable diseases, while around 27 million under one year old do not receive immunization. Malmierca pointed out that nearly 218 million children under 5 years old work, of them 126.3 million do it for very low salaries and without protection in sectors such as mining and agriculture. On the other hand, the ambassador told the Assembly about the conditions of Cuban children. He noted that in spite of the economic blockade of the U.S against the island and its hostile policy for over nearly 50 years, the country has made substantial progress in favor of children's well being. Cuba has one of the lowest infant mortality rates in the world: 5.3 per 1000 live births, Malmierca stressed, adding that they all have free access to education resulting in 99.6 percent of literacy. * ================================================================= NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems Since 1985 - Information for the Rest of Us Our main website: http://www.blythe.org List Archives: http://blythe-systems.com/pipermail/nytr/ Subscribe: http://blythe-systems.com/mailman/listinfo/nytr =================================================================
