[NYTr] Latin American Specialists Graduate from Cuban Med School Date: Wed, 12 Dec 2007 19:43:09 -0600 (CST) Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit Agencia Cubana de Noticias (ACN) http://ainch.ain.cu/mailman/listinfo/ingles Latin American Specialists Graduate from Cuban Med School Havana, Dec 12 (acn) Thirteen young doctors from Nicaragua, El Salvador and Peru have became the first graduates of General Integral Medicine from the Latin American School of Medicine in Havana. During the graduating ceremony, which was held at the Dr. Serafin Ruiz de Zarate School of Medicine in the Cuban central province of Villa Clara, the students received their degrees from Jose Luis Aparicio Suarez, president of that educational institution. Nicaraguan Bernabe Antonio Calero Cerna spoke on behalf of the graduates. He thanked the Cuban people for allowing them to feel like sons and daughters of this country, and thanked Cuban President Fidel Castro for providing scholarships to young people from low income families to study medicine in Cuba. The Latin American School of Medicine opened its doors in 1999. Since then more than 10,000 students have studied in Cuba, with an emphasis on the much needed primary healthcare in their countries. So far, 5,044 students from 57 nations have graduated as physicians in the 22 medical faculties throughout the island. Villa Clara joined the project in the 2001-2002 school year.
