[NYTr] In Peru, Political Fujimori Fallout: Minister's Job on the Line Date: Thu, 27 Sep 2007 20:10:07 -0500 (CDT) Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit In Peru: Political Fujimori Fallout Prensa Latina, Havana http://www.plenglish.com Peru, More at Stake Than a Minister Lima, Sep 27 (Prensa Latina) The importance of an understanding between the Peruvian Executive and the followers of ex President, now prisoner, Fujimori in Congress, was ratified on Thursday, as the fate of Interior Minister Luis Alva seems to be in their hands. This fuels suspicions that the tacit alliance existing between them and the Alan Garcia administration may help the extradited former ruler fare well in his coming trials. On Wednesday, Alva was strongly criticized in a long questioning about irregular surcharged purchases of 700 police cars and military supplies, an operation cancelled by the Interior Ministry itself. Alva had to answer 65 questions and repeated his denial of improper handling of these operations. However, the opposition declared itself dissatisfied and is demanding his dismissal. Media expectations focused on the small group of Fujimori followers in Congress, whose votes may be decisive for the minister's dismissal. They have supported the Government in previous questionings and votes, but they now face a dilemma because a vote for the minister could give credence to the widely held belief that Fujimori is receiving kid glove treatment because of their ties to the present administration. ef ccs rma mrs PL-28 * ================================================================= NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems Since 1985 - Information for the Rest of Us Our main website: http://www.blythe.org List Archives: http://blythe-systems.com/pipermail/nytr/ Subscribe: http://blythe-systems.com/mailman/listinfo/nytr =================================================================
