Cuban Official Confirms 10% Economic Growth Expected in 2007

Havana, September 27 (acn) Cuba's first deputy Economy and Planning 
Minister Alfonso Casanova said in Havana that Cuba's 2007 Gross 
Domestic Product will grow by ten percent if compared to previous years.

Casanova addressed participants at the 15th Session of the Cuba-Spain 
Business Cooperation Committee gathered at the Havana-based Hotel 
Nacional for the definition of their 2007-2008 working agenda.

The economic growth of the country will be determined by structural 
changes in areas related to the GDP, as well as increasing exports of 
products and services, energy saving, and geographical re-orientation 
of foreign trade, the official explained.

On the first day of sessions, over one hundred entrepreneurs exchanged 
about major economic fields, following the speeches by the President of 
the Cuban Chamber of Commerce Raul Becerra and by the President of the 
Higher Council of Spanish Chambers of Commerce, Javier Gomez Navarro.

The national energy program, underway in Cuba since 2005, was a focal 
point for participants. According to the Basic Industry Ministry 
technical director Juan M. Presa, this is a new strategy aimed at the 
efficient use of fossil fuels and the introduction of renewable sources 
of energy.

The energy saving initiative includes among other actions the operation 
of small power generators that would supply energy in Cuban localities 
in cases of natural disasters or other emergencies.

Other measures involve the replacement of incandescent light bulbs with 
energy-saving ones, the modernization of the electricity distribution 
network, including new electric meters, and the substitution of water 
pumps and several kinas of domestic appliances for efficient modern and 
low-energy consumption equipment.
