[NYTr] Venezuela: Oppos'n Seeks to "Annul" Const'l Changes Date: Wed, 19 Sep 2007 18:52:45 -0500 (CDT) Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit El Universal - Sep 18, 2007 http://english.eluniversal.com/2007/09/18/en_pol_art_opposition-cnr-reque_18A1038397.shtml Opposition CNR requests annulment of ChC!vez initiative Hermman EscarrC!, an attorney specialized in constitutional law, appeared Tuesday at the Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ) to make a motion to vacate the changes to the Constitution submitted by President Hugo ChC!vez. The university professor acted on behalf of opposition Comando Nacional de la Resistencia (CNR) and was accompanied by CNR leaders Oscar PC)rez, Antonio Ledezma, Helen FernC!ndez and Italo Luongo. "In the appeal filed with the TSJ Constitutional Court, the action taken by President ChC!vez is challenged because it is a coup on democracy and the Constitution by means of an extra-constitutional mechanism, and because, among other reasons, it alters the structure of the text, forces, undermines and damages constitutional principles and values," he explained. EscarrC! clarified, however, that the appeal at the judiciary is just a ceremony because they did not expect "much from the Constitutional Court, except for recording the President's coup both on democracy and the Constitution." * ================================================================= NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems Since 1985 - Information for the Rest of Us Our main website: http://www.blythe.org List Archives: http://blythe-systems.com/pipermail/nytr/ Subscribe: http://blythe-systems.com/mailman/listinfo/nytr =================================================================
