Cuba Promotes Sustainability Despite US Blockade

Havana, Sept 18 (acn) Cuban deputy Minister of Technology and 
Environment, Jose A. Diaz Duque, stressed on Tuesday in Montreal the 
efforts undertaken in his country to attain sustainability despite the 
economic, financial and commercial blockade imposed by Washington on 
the island over the last 45 years.

The Cuban official spoke in that Canadian city where two decades ago 
the Montreal Protocol was signed by 191 countries to deal with the 
progressive deterioration of the ozone layer.

Diaz referred to the island's achievements regarding the international 
campaign to reduce the use of ozone-depleting substances (ODS) such as 
chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), trichloroethylene and carbon tetrachloride.

He also mentioned the energy revolution undertaken in Cuba which 
includes the replacement of over 3.5 million old refrigerators that use 
CFCs for modern eco-friendly equipment.

The Cuban deputy Minister called on the First World countries to 
increase their contributions to the Multilateral Fund to deal with the 
new challenges that will include major transferences of technology.

Likewise, Diaz noted that these new challenges do not only take 
knowledge and innovation, but political will and social integration.

"Therefore, we can not patiently watch the huge contradiction between 
the performance of the global environmental agreements, in one hand, 
and the harmony of nature, in the other hand," he added.
