Guatemala House Split Three Ways

Colom Wins Most Votes, but No Majority, and Faces Run-off

Guatemala, Sep 11 (Prensa Latina) Three political parties have achieved
the majority of seats in the Guatemalan Congress, however, they will be
unable to legislate unless they join together.

After 99.09 percent of votes were counted, UNE (Unidad Nacional de la
Esperanza) had obtained 48 seats, the Grand National Alliance 37, and
the Patriotic Party 30.

These three political factions comprise 115 parliamentarians,
representing 73 percent of the 158 seats, so they will have to form
alliances whenever two thirds of votes will be needed to pass laws or
legislative resolutions.

On the other hand, official figures revealed today that Alvaro Colom
won the Sunday elections in 18 of the 22 Guatemalan departments, at a
time when only 2.98 percent of votes are still to be counted.

In the general counting, the UNE candidate holds 18.39 percent of
votes, with his best results in the northern regions of Peten and
Izabal, with 38.99 and 38.69 percent respectively.
