Cuba Advances in Development of Orthopedic Technologies

Havana, Sept 11 (acn) Cuba advances in the implementation of a 
Traumatology and Orthopedics development plan that includes the 
implantation of complete prostheses of elbow and shoulder.

Speaking to Granma news daily, Dr. Rodrigo Alvarez Cambras, President 
of the Cuban Traumatology and Orthopedics Society, said that this plan 
will be presented during the Congress on Traumatology and Orthopedics 
that will take place in the Cuban westernmost province of Pinar del Rio 
on September 17-22.

Alvarez Cambras announced that the introduction of up-to-the-minute 
technologies will continue in 2007 and next year with the substitution 
of hips affected by tumors, traumas or infections and also with the use 
of double-articulation prostheses for the treatment of hip fractures.

He added that by the end of 2007, all provincial hospitals will already 
have incorporated a new surgical procedure with the use of new pins in 
the treatment of femur and tibia fractures. Cambras explained that this 
new technique facilitates a minimally invasive surgical process with 
speedy recovery and social reinsertion of patients, among other 
advantages.
