Peru Deploys Troops to the northern Andes, Causing Alarm

Lima, Sep 7 (Prensa Latina) The National Peruvian Human Rights
Committee denounced the sending of troops to a north Andean territory
on Friday, considering that Ayabaca is preparing for a referendum on a
mining project that the government rejects.

Committee representative Mar Perez said she received information that
Army forces have been sent to Ayabaca, in the northern region of the
Peruvian Andes, where authorities and social organizations will hold a
popular consultation on September 16.

The referendum asks the population to decide on implementation of the
Rio Blanco Project to exploit copper and molybdenum, undertaken by
Majaz mining company.

Farmers in the area say the project can pollute the environment and
waters, as well as destroy important export crops.

The president of the Farmers Rounds (traditional popular vigilance) of
Yanta, Ayabaca, Magdiel Carrion, informed the human rights committee
that two trucks with soldiers are in the zone.
