Officials from both nations and members of the diplomatic corps in the Cuban capital attended the opening of the institution, which will serve to promote trade between the two countries and is a step closer in the regional integration process. During the inauguration, Cuban Foreign Trade Minister Raul de la Nuez said that, in spite of the US almost 50-year-old blockade against Cuba, the island has been able to achieve a stable economic growth. He added that in 2006 Trinidad and Tobago became Cuba's main commercial partner in the Caribbean with the bilateral trade standing at over $65 million, which was 41% of the Cuban trade with Caribbean nations. "Only united can Third World countries face and overcome the challenges and adversities of the current world order that imposes a discriminatory, unequal and unjust commercial exchange in which the neoliberal policies prevail," he noted. For his part, Manning explained that the office is unique in the sub-region due to its implications as it will promote the progressive liberalization of trade and services, the setting up and operation of joint companies, and the development of mechanisms for the protection of investments. The visitor stressed that this office will not only contribute to the strengthening of ties between Cuba and Trinidad and Tobago but also with the other members of the Caribbean Community or CARICOM. Manning and his accompanying delegation arrived in Cuba on Thursday afternoon for an official visit that will conclude on Saturday. His agenda includes official talks with Cuban First Vice President Raul Castro. * ================================================================= .NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems .
