Thousands of Victims in Nicaragua in Wake of Hurricane Felix

BILWI, Nicaragua, September 5.b After hitting the northeastern
Caribbean coast of Nicaragua as a category 5 hurricane, Felix left in
its wake a still undetermined number of deaths, 200 people missing and
an estimated 50,000 with damaged or destroyed homes.

Meanwhile other Central American countries remain on alert for possible
flooding and landslides, reported AFP news service.

President Ortega traveled to Puerto Cabezas (also known as Bilwi), the
largest population center affected by Felix, and warned that the number
of deaths could rise as more information comes in from the outlying
rural communities.

Besides the severe damage in Puerto Cabezas, 90 percent of the
infrastructure was destroyed in the coastal communities of Sandy Bay,
Bismona and others, reported Civil Defense authorities.

The president announced that offers of assistance have come in from
Venezuela and other countries and that there is already an advance
brigade of Cuban doctors in the region.
