Dengue Cases Increase in Brazil

Brasilia, Sep 6 (Prensa Latina) In the first seven months of this year
Brazil has registered 439,000 dengue cases, a 45 percent increase
compared to the same period of 2006, which was the worst year in the
country's history, the Health Ministry informed on Thursday.

The three states suffering the greatest dengue outbreak are Mato Grosso
do Sul, Rio de Janeiro and Parana, although Sao Paulo also has a very
high level of cases, with over 62,000.

Secretary Gerson Pena of Epidemiology Vigilance attributes the growth
to the population's difficulty in changing their habits.

However, one-quarter of homes in critical locations have not been
visited either because of alleged security reasons or because no one is
home during the day, the ministry report asserted.

Pena warned of the danger that when dengue is repeated, it often
reappears in the hemorrhagic form, which can be fatal.

Brazil's dengue mortality rate of 13 percent greatly exceeds that
tolerated by the World Health Organization.
