Cuba: Cienfuegos Marks 50th Uprising Anniversary

Cienfuegos, Cuba, Sep 5 (Prensa Latina) Cuban President Fidel Castro
and the first Vice President Raul Castro congratulated the people of
this city on the 50th anniversary of the popular uprising against the
Fulgencio Batista dictatorship (1952-1958).

During the ceremony at the south center city located 190 miles south
east of Havana, Vice President of the State Council Jose Ramon Machado
Ventura conveyed greetings from Fidel and Raul Castro, who expressed
their confidence in the people.

The official recalled the extraordinary coup of audacity, courage and
sacrifice of the participants in the patriotic action, carried out on
September 5, 1957 against Batista, responsible for the killing and
disappearance of 20,000 Cubans.

He explained that although the action did not succeed in forming a new
fighting focus, it showed that the solid support of the armed forces to
the dictatorship was a lie and stimulated those who fought in the
Sierra Maestra at the orders of Fidel Castro.

That uprising in the early hours of September 5 of the 26th July
Movement militias, the revolutionary navy troops and the people of
Cienfuegos is a page of glory in the history of Cuban popular struggle,
stressed Machado.

Recognition was given to the veterans of that action and especially to
those who offered their lives, whose example is followed by the people
today.
