Escalona told Prensa Latina that one of the two master lectures to be given during the Festival would deal with the arrival of Chinese immigrants in Cuba. The other lecture will be entitled "Sites of Memory, World Heritage and Popular Religiosity". As part of the Festival, the workshop "Identity and Tradition" will be held, and some 40 papers will be debated at commissions on tradition and community work, ethno-cultural history, and parties, dances, storytelling and religiosity. The Festival will be held at the San Severino Castle, an 18th-century Spanish fortress where the city of Matanzas was founded in 1793. Historians say that Asian immigrants became involved in the development of Matanzas province in 1847, a period marked by a boom in the sugar industry. Statistics show that 47 percent of all Chinese immigrants in Cuba in 1870 lived in Matanzas, Cardenas and Colon. ef jg wap ag * ================================================================= .NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems .
