Jamaican PM Admits Electoral Defeat

Kingston, Sep 5 (Prensa Latina) Jamaica's People's National Party
admitted defeat Wednesday in Monday's parliamentary elections, in which
opposition Jamaica Labour Party was the winner by a narrow margin.

"The People's National Party will always respect the people's will,"
said Jamaican Prime Minister Portia Simpson-Miller, who insisted after
the final count that irregularities denounced during the elections
should be investigated.

In office since March 2006, Simpson-Miller had called for a recount
when she learned that some of her followers could not exert their right
to vote.

Simpson-Miller also alerted that some JLP candidates hold US
citizenship and are thus disqualified from voting as legislators,
according to the Jamaican Constitution.

Election authorities said preliminary results gave 32 seats for JLP
against 28 for PNP, in power for the last 18 years.
