[NYTr] Fujimori Case Sours Peru-Chile Relations at UNHRC Date: Wed, 5 Sep 2007 19:27:00 -0500 (CDT) Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit Prensa Latina, Havana http://www.plenglish.com Fujimori Case Heats Up Peru-Chile Riff Lima, Sept 5 (Prensa Latina) A prominent lawyer said on Wednesday that Peru must condition its support for Chile to join the United Nations Human Rights Commission on the extradition of former President Alberto Fujimori. Ex UN Human Rights Rapporteur Enrique Bernales pointed out that Peru must coldly weigh its support for Chile's candidacy to join the Council, according to its interests and goal to try Fujimori. Personalities from the two countries warned that Chile would have difficulties to join that UN body if the Chilean Supreme Court of Justice rejects the extradition of the former Peruvian president, who is accused of crimes against humankind and corruption. Bernales told the state-owned news agency Andina that in international organizations such as the United Nations, a country's candidacy is promoted regionally. In this case, the Latin American Group (GRULA) chooses the regional candidates, so it will not depend on Chile, but on the interests of the countries involved. Within this context, Bernales said it will be hard to predict the GRULA's stance if Chilean justice rules against Fujimori's extradition, so Peru's position will be very important. ef jg mrs * ================================================================= .NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems .
