[NYTr] Cuban Premier of "Zuzu Angel" Date: Wed, 5 Sep 2007 00:59:46 -0500 (CDT) Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit Granma Daily - Sep 3, 2007 http://www.granma.cubaweb.cu/english/news/art12.html Cuban Premier of "Zuzu Angel" by PEDRO DE LA HOZ Zuzu Angel could have remained indifferent about what was going on in her country and continued living the glamorous life of Hollywood stars and the international jet set, but her life changed when she found out that her son Stuart had died in 1971 at the hands of the Brazilian military. Afterwards, she did all she could to try to recover her sonbs body and to denounce the barbarity of the regime both inside the country and abroad, up until her tragic death under bizarre circumstances in 1976. The story about a famous fashion designer was brought to the silver screen in "Zuzu Angel" (2006), by director Sergio Rezende and writer Marcos Bernstein, and will be shown for the first time in Cuba this month during a week of Brazilian cinema. In the early hours of April 14, 1976, the designer, whose real name was Zuleika Angel, died in a car accident while exiting a tunnel in Rio de Janeiro. According to witnesses, an Army jeep was nearby. Two weeks before the accident, Angel had given a letter to singer-songwriter Chico Buarque of Hollanda which read, "If I die due to an accident or some other reason, it will have been at the hands of my sonbs murderers." Chico would later dedicate one of his most emotional songs to the memory of Angel entitled Angelica. The screening of "Zuzu Angel" in Cuba coincides with the publication for the first time in Brazil of "Derecho a la Memoria y a la Verdad," a book about the atrocities committed by the military dictatorship between 1964 and 1985. A 1979 amnesty pardoned all those involved in any crimes committed under the regime. The screening of Rezendebs movie has an additional attraction for the Cuban public as it features three characters from the Brazilian soap opera "Cabocla," currently being broadcasted on Cuban television. The Brazilian film showing at Havanabs Charles Chaplin Theater opens with "El aC1o que mis padres salieron de vacaciones" (The Year My Parents Went on Vacation) (2006), by Cao Hamburguer, Jury Award winner at last Novemberbs Sao Paulo International Film Festival. * ================================================================= .NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems .
