Release of Paraguayan Coupist Imminent

Asuncion, Sep 4 (Prensa Latina) The parole of Paraguayan ex Gen. Lino
Oviedo, serving a 10 year sentence in prison, is expected in a matter
of hours, Senate President Miguel Abdon Saguier announced Tuesday,
based on information from the Military Court (TJM).

Col. Carlos Liseras, president of the TJM, will report to Abdon Saguier
when the court is ready to make a statement, but the result is
predictable because the Attorney General has not presented an objection.

Oviedo was named chief of the Army in 1993 and attempted a coup against
President Carlos Wasmosy in 1996.  He was imprisoned, but pardoned in a
polemic maneuver by President Raul Cubas.  When Cubas resigned in 1999,
Lino Oviedo fled into exile.  He returned to Paraguay in 2004 and was
arrested and sentenced to 10 years in military prison.

Meanwhile, his followers have begun a vigil in front of Vinas Cue
Prison on the outskirts of Asuncion.
