Cuba Reports Its Progress in Seismology Research

Havana, Aug 31 (acn) After the creation of a national institute for 
seismological research (CENAIS)15 years ago, Cuba has made a lot of 
progress in the monitoring of earthquakes, paying particular attention 
to the eastern part of the country, which is the most vulnerable area.

In statements posted by Granma newspaper, O'leary Gonzalez Matos, 
CENAIS director explained that seismology experts have an 
infrastructure that has been created all over the country enabling the 
monitoring, registration and evaluation of the telluric activity in the 
island.

The expert said CENAIS not only monitors the seismic activity in the 
island but also in the Caribbean, while keeping a fluid exchange with 
world organizations.

Cuba, along with the rest of the Antilles archipelago, is located on 
the seismic strip that spans through Central America onto the Pacific 
Ocean. Fortunately, only low-intensity earthquakes have been registered 
in the island.

Seismic monitoring stations have been set up in the most vulnerable 
areas, which constantly issues detailed reports on the telluric 
activity in the main earthquake-generating zones of the country.

As a result of CENAIS experts' research, a full study of the risks of 
the city of Santiago de Cuba was completed, along with an Atlas 
containing the natural dangers in the municipalities of Guama in the 
eastern province of Santiago.
