[NYTr] Mass Protests in Chile Date: Thu, 30 Aug 2007 18:31:28 -0500 (CDT) Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit Prensa Latina, Havana http://www.plenglish.com Mass Protests in Chile Santiago de Chile, Aug 30 (Prensa Latina) Chilean union leaders praised demonstrations by thousands of workers condemning neoliberalism and social exclusion. Maria Rozas, vice president of the United Worker s Central, told Prensa Latina that professionals from the health system, education, copper subcontractors and students, among others, joined the protests. Rozas condemned the violent repression by the police in clashes with demonstrators which, to date include more than a hundred arrested. Demonstrator Ignacio Flores told Prensa Latina that the concentration "was a huge step towards unity of progressive forces against current labor legislation of the business sector, which is a clear expression of social inequality." For his part, Patricio Vejar of the Christian Left added that "today we condemn the neoliberalism that has been responsible for the destruction of the environment and provoked labor uncertainty." President Michelle Bachelet called on demonstrators to make their demands and exercise their rights peacefully adding that "the country needs dialogue and not pressure, agreements and not violence."
