German Left Party Official Winds up Visit to Cuba

Havana, Aug 30 (acn) 20th century Socialism does exist with different
expressions according to social, economic and historic conditions of
each country, said the co-president of the German Left party, Oskar
Lafontaine, after meeting with Cuban Communist Party officials, in
Havana.

Lafontaine said his current visit to the island is a gesture of
solidarity to the homeland of Jose Marti, and he expressed his
interests in strengthening bilateral links and exchange.

The German Left party leader met in Havana with Jose Ramon Machado
Ventura, member of the Political Bureau of Cuba's Communist Party on
the development of bilateral links and ways for its further
strengthening.

The visitor expressed his thankfulness for what he described as "the
warm hospitality received in Cuba" and pointed out that The German
Left party follows with interest new events underway in Latin America.

During the meeting, Machado Ventura said that relations with the
German Left party continue to advance with prospects for the future.

"We are grateful to the German Party leaders for having picked Latin
America, and Cuba in particular, for their first abroad," said the
Cuban Communist Party official and stressed the emergence of
progressive governments in Venezuela, Bolivia and Brazil, among other
countries of the region.

The German party leader was accompanied by federal deputies Klaus
Ernest, vice-president of the German Left party and by Nele Hirsh.

Lafontaine, who winds up his visit to Cuba on Thursday, also met with
the head of the International Relations Department of the Cuban
Communist Party, Fernando Remirez, with Foreign Minister Felipe Perez
Roque and with Jaime Crombet, vice-president of the Cuban Parliament.
