Int'l Cooperation Helps Local Agriculture Expand in E. Cuba

Guantanamo, Aug 29 (acn) A total of 15 cultivation greenhouses have 
been set up in this eastern region of Cuba with the collaboration of 
several international agricultural projects.

The province of Guantanamo, whose economy is mainly based on 
agriculture, has benefited widely from more than 30 international 
collaboration projects involving among other organizations, UN's 
Program for Local Human Development, and various European 
non-governmental organizations.

The collaboration project has brought about an increase in the 
production of vegetables such as cucumber, tomato and pepper. It has 
also helped in the raising of rabbits, sheep, cattle and poultry, 
according to statements by the Cuban Ministry for Foreign Investment 
and Economic Collaboration (MINVEC) to ACN.

The international organizations have contributed nearly 2.5 million 
Cuban pesos, half of which in Cuban convertible Pesos, which equals 0.8 
dollars, to the development of agriculture in the eastern region of 
Cuba.

Among other foreign institutions supporting the project are CARE, from 
France, Paz y Tercer Mundo (Peace and The Third World), Spain, German 
AgroAction, and the Red Cross, from Germany.

As a result of the collaboration initiative, the annual agricultural 
income has grown to nearly a million pesos from the growing of 
seedlings. That figure equals the income of two cooperatives in a year.
