The chief of the Cuban medical brigade in Nicaragua, Luis Carlos Avila, told Prensa Latina that specialists in Sandino City's ophthalmologic hospital have cared for nearly 13,000 patients. The clinic was opened last May after being inaugurated by President Daniel Ortega. Cuba contributed with medical equipment and staff as part of the Eye Surgery Program and the Bolivarian Alternative of the Americas (ALBA), an integration initiative boosted by Venezuela and Bolivia.
