Rage Growing at PR Police Executions

San Juan, Aug 16 (Prensa Latina) Many sectors were up in arms in Puerto
Rico on Thursday in the wake of reports about police officers who
execute defenseless citizens in public and remain unpunished.

On Wednesday hundreds of people protested outside the police
headquarters in Hato Rey, San Juan, carrying banners against the FBI.

The incident that stirred people's outrage occurred in Humacao on
Saturday, when a policeman, instigated by two of his partners, killed
someone over a traffic violation disagreement in front of several local
residents.

Police authorities claimed self-defense, but TV channels showed images
taken of the killing by a bystander's cellphone, proving their argument
factually inconsistent.

Community leader Milagros Rivera denounced that police have
"traditionally" covered up crimes committed by its own, many of whom
abuse their authority to the detriment of marginalized sectors,
including illegal immigrants, who are afraid to report these violations.

Organizations taking part in the protest demanded Puerto Rico Governor
Anibal Acevedo Vila and Police Chief Pedro Toledo respect the civil
rights of all residents in the Island.
