US Releases Another Terrorist: Osvaldo Mitat Freed

Havana, August 17 (acn) The US government has failed to comply once 
more with its own war against terrorism by releasing Osvaldo Mitat, a 
notorious Cuban-born terrorist based in Miami.

Mitat was freed Thursday after spending just 22 months in jail. He 
didn't serve out his sentence for the illegal possession of arms, 
planned to be used in attacks in Cuba, reports Granma newspaper.

Mitat and Santiago Alvarez Fernandez-Magrina, both notorious 
terrorists, were accused of having an illegal arm and explosives stash. 
However, the prosecution --which called them "freedom fighters"-- 
reached an agreement with them in exchange for their "cooperation."

In one of their many labors in support of operations against Cuba, in 
2005, Mitat and Alvarez helped terrorist kingpin Luis Posada Carriles 
enter the United States illegally aboard the Santrina shrimp boat they 
had hired for the smuggling operation.

Posada, wanted in Venezuela for numerous crimes including the bombing 
of a Cuban airliner that killed 73 persons, was cleared of illegal 
immigration charges and freed in May of this year.

A southern Florida TV channel rejoiced Thursday with the news of 
Mitat's release. Mitat said on camera that his friend Santiago would 
also be released soon.
